Hi Journal Friends [✍️what a lame alternative to Time Buddies!]

Welcome back to another reflective session, where I share personal anecdotes, profound thoughts, and insights into the tech world. Today, we dive deeper into the role of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), the immense demand for trusted AI advisory services, and the inspirations drawn from 37Signals, wrapping it all up with a light-hearted evening ritual of pillow-fighting and “oof-ing.”

Mike’s voice recording that was the input for AI to write this ‘journail’ entry

Every morning, my day starts with a whirlwind of thoughts as I navigate through the daily routine with my daughter. The internal debate on whether to jot down certain reflections in my journal or keep it spontaneous is constant. Recording these thoughts seems prudent, but the sheer volume makes me wonder about their importance.

Team Building and Company Goals

The focus then shifts to my team and our goals. Reflecting on the individual stories within my team and how we come together during team-building events is always enlightening [✍️ but the first team-building event for me is yet to come hence I am organizing one]. These moments are pivotal for setting our yearly goals and alignment within the company. It’s fascinating to see how references made during interviews resurface and shape our objectives.

Inspiration from 37Signals and Shape Up

37Signals, the creators of Basecamp and the book “Shape Up,” have always been a source of inspiration. Their approach to software development, especially through their agile methodology, is intriguing. They critique traditional sprints and propose a more practical six-week cycle for project completion. This idea resonates deeply with me as it strikes a balance—long enough to achieve something substantial but short enough to maintain momentum and focus.

Rant on Software Development Methodologies

The world of software development methodologies is vast and varied. From waterfall to agile, each has its strengths and weaknesses. The thought of “No more chasing waterfalls” [✍️ which you will hear me sing if you listen to the voice memo/podcast] as a theme song for agile methodologies puts a humorous spin on this discussion. Yet, as a CTO, navigating these methodologies and finding the best fit for our projects is crucial.

The Evolving Role of a CTO

The role of a CTO is multifaceted. While some companies seek a lead developer, others require strategic oversight more reminiscent of a portfolio manager. My experience spans across various spectrums—software development, cybersecurity, AI, and infrastructure. This breadth of knowledge positions me well for roles that demand versatility and strategic vision.

Exploring AI and Personal Resolutions

AI continues to revolutionize our workflows, from smart editing features in Descript to focus modes on my iPhone that optimize productivity. A recent notification from Apple’s journal app made me wish I were their product manager, envisioning even more robust features. It’s exciting to think of a localized diary that seamlessly integrates photos, voice notes, and geolocation-specific suggestions.

Brain Burst and AI Advisory Services

With the advent of AI, there is a burgeoning need for independent, trusted advisors. Many industries—legal, accountancy, software development—are seeking guidance on integrating AI to enhance efficiency. The idea of providing AI advisory services as an offering is compelling. Imagine a service bundling knowledge from various AI platforms, offering specialized advice tailored to unique industry needs.

Final Thoughts and AI Experiment

As the day winds down, it’s time for some personal time with my daughter. Our evening ritual of pillow fights packs fun and laughter, contrasting deeply with the day’s tech-heavy musings. We also have a playful term—”oof-ing”—borrowed from her favorite Roblox game [✍️ actually from a Roblox-playing family called KinTin Plays] for virtual dying, which adds an amusing twist to our evening antics.

So, journal friends [✍️ LAME!], today’s reflection took us through evolving CTO roles, the high demand for AI advisory services, and inspirations from 37Signals. And just like that, we end on a playful note with a pillow fight and some “oof-ing.”

Peace out,
Mike

✍️ PS. I might have to Nail My Jour tomorrow since I’ll be manning the Previder booth on CorporatiePlein 2024.

✍️ PPS. This evening I also read about the Egg Theory but then in a very different context: the Egg Theory more like the IKEA Effect.

What's on your mind?
